Beyond the CPL: Getting Airline Ready

Navigating the airline hiring process, group discussions, and your first type rating.

You have completed your 200 hours of flying and earned your Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with multi-engine and instrument ratings. This is a major milestone—you are now legally eligible to be paid to fly.

However, transitioning from a licensed pilot to an airline professional requires clearing a structured hiring process. Airlines are not only evaluating your flying ability, but also your decision-making, communication, and ability to perform under pressure.

Think of this stage as moving from qualification to employment—where you prove you are ready for the airline environment.
Step 01

The Airline Hiring Process

Airline recruitment in India is competitive and multi-layered. When applying for a Junior First Officer role, you will typically go through the following stages:

  • Written Exams: Technical assessments based on navigation, meteorology, and aviation theory.
  • Psychometric Testing: Evaluation of mental aptitude, spatial awareness, and multitasking ability.
  • Group Discussion (GD): Assessment of communication, teamwork, and leadership under pressure.
  • Personal Interview: Technical and HR evaluation by senior airline professionals.
  • Simulator Assessment: Practical testing of flying skills and emergency handling in a simulator.
Step 02

Company Medical Assessment

Even if you hold a valid DGCA Class I Medical Certificate , airlines conduct their own pre-employment medical checks.

These assessments ensure that candidates meet the airline’s internal safety and health standards before final selection.

Step 03

The Type Rating

Once selected, the final step is completing a type rating program on a specific aircraft.

This training focuses entirely on a particular aircraft model such as:

  • Airbus A320 family
  • Boeing 737 series

The program includes system-level training, simulator sessions, and emergency procedure handling. After successful completion, the aircraft type is endorsed on your license.

Some airlines sponsor type ratings with employment agreements, while others require candidates to complete the training independently before applying.

What’s the Next Step?

You have completed the full journey from eligibility to airline readiness. The final piece is understanding the financial rewards of this career.
