Education, age limits, and DGCA eligibility for aspiring commercial pilots.
In our ultimate pilot roadmap, we covered the high-level steps to reaching the cockpit. But before you start looking at flight schools or studying aerodynamics, we need to talk about eligibility.
Aviation is a highly regulated industry. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has strict baseline requirements that every aspiring pilot must meet.
The PCM Rule (Education)
The foundation of pilot training is rooted in science and numbers. To be eligible for a CPL in India:
- The Core Rule: Pass 10+2 from a recognized board.
- Mandatory Subjects: Physics and Mathematics are compulsory.
The Backup Plan (Commerce or Arts)
You can clear Physics and Mathematics through NIOS:
- Enroll as an On-Demand student
- Pass Physics & Math exams
- Combine NIOS marksheet with your 10+2 certificate
Age Limits
Most students begin early to align training with eligibility:
- SPL: 16 for ground classes, 17 for flying
- CPL: Minimum 18 years
Language Proficiency
Aviation runs on English communication. You must pass the Aviation English Language Proficiency (AELP) test to qualify.
